Environmental Justice Recommendations Report Approved
On September 30, 2003 the California Environmental Protection
Agency (Cal/EPA) Advisory Committee on Environmental Justice
issued a recommendations report concerning public participation
in agency decisions, cumulative environmental impacts, prevention
of pollution, and protection of public health. Dr. Joseph
Lyou stated that the report would make it possible for California
to achieve environmental justice, defined as the treatment
of people of all races, cultures, and incomes with respect
to the development, adoption, implementation, and enforcement
of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Cal/EPA
Secretary Winston Hickox has promised that Cal/EPA will
consider the formal adoption and implementation of the recommendations
report. See www.calepa.ca.gov/EnvJustice/Committee/
for a list of committee members.

Stop Breast Cancer Where it Starts - Stop Toxic Pollution
Thursday, October 16, 2003, 7 pm - 9 pm
Participate in a lively discussion about the scam of Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. Find out how pharmaceutical and
chemical company giant Astra Zeneca conceived of Breast
Cancer Awareness Month to
increase their sales of tamoxifen (a drug given to women
after they are diagnosed with breast cancer, and that is
also on the Prop 65 list of cancer causing chemicals). Industry-backed
events Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Race for the Cure
fail to talk about real prevention of breast cancer - stopping
the toxic pollution that is
causing elevated rates of cancer. Speakers are breast cancer
survivors Barbara Brenner, the Executive Director of Breast
Cancer Action, Judy Brady with the Toxic Links Coalition,
and Marleen Quint, who is a health advocate.
Location: Ecology Center, 2530 San Pablo Ave., near Dwight
Way, Berkeley.
Cost: Free.
Info: 510/548-2220 x233.
RESOURCES AND SUPPORT
www.BreastCancer.org Open Chat Room
We've heard from many of you that you would like a place
where you can connect with one another in real time to share
information and to give and receive support. As many of
you know, the breastcancer.org discussion boards are already
a wonderful place to meet other caring people who are going
through similar experiences. We're hoping that the Open
Chat Room will add another vital element to our ongoing
community-building efforts. The Open Chat Room will be available
for one hour every Monday during the month of October. We've
scheduled the Chat Room sessions at different times each
week to try to accommodate as many different time zones
as possible. There will be a moderator in the Chat Room
to make sure it is a safe and comfortable place for everyone,
and that it is used only for discussion within the breastcancer.org
community.
Open Chat Rooms are scheduled for:
Monday, October 13th, 5:30pm EDT
Monday, October 20th, 1:30pm EDT
Monday, October 27th, 9:30am, EST
To join the Open Chat these dates, go to www.breastcancer.org
anytime between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. EDT* and click on the
