WCRC NEWS

This year's Swim-A-Mile was the best ever. Over 500 swimmers participated in the event and over $175,000 had been collected so far. When all of the pledges come in we expect to exceed our goal of $200,000. The music was great, the pool was lovely, and the atmosphere was fun! A big heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the organizers, volunteers, swimmers, and donors.

ATTENTION ALAMEDA, OAKLAND AND SAN LEANDRO RESIDENTS! STOP THE INCINERATOR IN DISGUISE!!!
Just when you thought the air had less dioxin and mercury in it now that the IES incinerators are closed....guess what the City of Alameda Power and Telecom agency is up to?!!!

Greenaction will be attending the Alameda Public Utilities Commission meeting on Monday, October 20th at 7 p.m. to raise concerns about this incinerator in disguise. Contact us or APT for the location.

PLEASE GET INVOLVED. YOUR PARTICIPATION, INVOLVEMENT AND DONATIONS ARE NEEDED SO WE CAN STOP THIS NEW THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

Alameda, Oakland & San Leandro Residents:
Stop the City of Alameda's Toxic Plan!

  • Alameda Power & Telecom is considering building an incinerator-like technology called "gasification" in San Leandro, Oakland, or Alameda. It would heat waste, creating gas that would be burned to create electricity for the City of Alameda.

  • The facility would have toxic releases including metals and dioxin, one of the deadliest chemicals known to science. For example, Brightstar Environmental, one of the companies held up as an example by the City's consultants, admits on their website that its technology emits dioxin and mercury.

  • The technology is very new and has not been tried on a full-scale in the U.S. Brightstar's only facility (in Australia) has had delays, shutdowns, and technical glitches and has been cited for exceeding limits for arsenic and sulphur trioxide. The community there is now stuck with a 20-year contract for which it will pay a set fee for 20 years.

  • Even small amounts of dioxin can cause cancer, birth defects, hormonal changes, diabetes, developmental and immune problems. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin, and health effects include loss of memory, delayed development functions, seizures, and impacts on the heart, kidney and lung.

  • Contrary to the claims of City officials, garbage is not a renewable energy source. Instead of gasification, safer alternatives like wind and solar energy should be used. Alameda should work towards zero waste through prevention, composting, and recycling.

  • East Bay residents breathed easier when the IES incinerators in Oakland closed.
Don't Let a New Trash Burner be Built!
