POLITICS AND LAW

Measure A: Alameda County
Measure A proposes a small tax increase to keep open local hospitals and clinics, in our case Highland Hospital. Nearly 30% of WCRC’s clients receive care at Highland and it is the Alameda County trauma center. Its closure would be devastating to the Oakland community.

See http://www.measurea.org/ for more information.

Most importantly, we encourage all of you as members of the community to let your voice be heard by voting Tues., March 2!

Healthcare in the presidential election

"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."
—Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the next several weekly bulletins, we’ll be including the policy statements on health care for the Democratic presidential candidates. The ranks of the uninsured grew by 3.8 million between 2000 and 2002 and now total 44 million people, including 9 million children. The average family saw its health insurance premiums increase by $2,700 from 2000 to 2003. We’d like to remind you all to vote in the upcoming primary election. Every voter’s participation is more crucial than ever!

We were unable to find the Rev. Al Sharpton’s statement on healthcare. Visit his website for further information: http://www.sharpton2004.org.
