WCRC NEWS

Congratulations!
More than 10 couples who are staff, board, volunteers, consultants, donors and friends of the Women's Cancer Resource Center have been joined in marriage at San Francisco City Hall since mid-February. We join in celebrating your marriages and your love. WCRC was founded by two lesbian women nearly 20 years ago; surely today they are looking down and smiling broadly on these declarations of love and commitment. From all of us at WCRC, to all of you who are saying "I do," please know you have our warmest congratulations and best wishes.

Art and Cancer at WCRC
Creativity, Healing and Wholeness: Written and Visual Journaling as a Path Through Cancer
Creativity, our innate birthright, can facilitate healing and wholeness at many levels. Written and visual art practices have been a mainstay through challenges as "opportunities" in my life, including cancer. Participate in simple creative processes that can become both a release and guide through your healing journey. No art-making experience necessary.

Tuesday, March 30, 7 - 8:30 PM at WCRC

WCRC working collaboratively for Spanish-Speaking Women with Cancer
WCRC is working in Contra Costa County to provide more coordinated access to cancer diagnosis, treatment and support services through the Women's Cancer Initiative. We are pleased to report we have just been awarded our fourth annual grant from the John Muir/Mt Diablo Community Health Fund to continue this work.

The goal of the WCI is to expand outreach, treatment and support to those Spanish speaking women who, because of language, income, education and cultural challenges, often receive much more limited healthcare than their English-speaking sisters. WCRC works collaboratively with the Wellness Community, La Clinica, the American Cancer Society, Contra Costa Health Services as well as Anna's Program and Hospice and Palliative Care of Contra Costa. Our goal is create awareness, help women through their diagnosis and treatment, and provide a coordinated continuum of services in Contra Costa County.

If you have questions about the program, please contact Millie Ruiz, the WCRC's Latina Services Coordinator at 510-601-4040 x 110.

The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act
This bill will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It will eliminate the “drive-through mastectomy” where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor; still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached. Information and petition.
