Swimming Through Air & Time
The WCRC Gallery’s upcoming show features Marsha
Balian’s vibrant figurative work and Judy Levit’s
mixed-media abstractions. “Swimming Through Air and
Time” combines the paintings of the two women artists
who both utilize bold color and explore emotional realms
in their work.
The exhibit presents Levit’s “floating”
series that using organic shapes and nonrealistic color
to express and investigation of the concepts of “inner”
and “outer” space. She creates from her imagination
and dreams, allowing the process of her work to show on
the canvas. She believes that lines and marks that appear
and disappear represent unspoken language and thoughts.
Levit has shown has shown her work at the Berkeley Art Center,
Walnut Creek Civic Arts, and Laney College.
The show also includes the work of self-taught artist,
Marsha Balian. She explores the role of family – how
each of us weaves the desire for family or connection into
our lives. Balian has displayed her work at Bucci’s,
La Peña Cultural Center, and the ACCI Gallery. Her
work has also graced the covers of East Bay Monthly Magazine
and Urban View.
The show runs October 22 through December 17, 2004. A reception
with the artists will be on Friday, October 22, 6-8 PM.
The event features live music by “Jazz Express.”
The jazz trio includes Sally Hanna-Rhyne on piano, David
Topham on marimba and trumpet and Carol Dearmoant on bass.
The WCRC Gallery is located at 5741 Telegraph Avenue in
Oakland. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. There is
no charge for the show or the reception.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It is a great time to be thinking about what we as women
can do to protect ourselves from cancer. Have you had a
mammogram? In the past year? Your annual gynecological exam?
Does your teen think smoking makes her look cool?
We at WCRC have lots of in-house expertise and are prepared
to come out and talk with your group, book club, hiking
club, bowling team – any gathering of women to share
the good news about what each of us can do to protect ourselves
from cancer and how to get the best possible care if you
should have a diagnosis.
Please let’s all work to raise awareness this fall
not just about breast cancer, but all the cancers for which
women are at risk. Wearing pink is one thing -- educating
a woman friend is real help indeed. Call Dolores and she

Volunteer Training and Opportunities
The next volunteer training that will be held on Saturday,
November 6 (9-5) and Sunday, November 7 (10-4).

is particularly important for those volunteers that are
interested in participating in the Betts (in-home) support
program, but is beneficial for everybody that is interested
in volunteering at WCRC.
Volunteering with WCRC is a really fun thing to do! You
have the opportunity to be a part of a community, health
or volunteer fair, find out about the great work being done
at other organizations and also there is often good music,
beautiful art and delicious food. Please contact me if you
would like to sign up for one of these events.
The shifts will probably be for about 3 or 4 hours each
and we try to have 2 people per shift. One person stops
by the center to pick up the materials prior to the event
and another person returns the materials sometime the following

Free Transgender Health Workshops in Berkeley
Transcend: An afternoon of FTM and Gender Queer Health
for FTMs, people on the FTM spectrum, gender queer people
and our allies.

Joyful Body: Movement/Meditation/Menopause – Session
Two: Loss and Liberation
Women of color, lesbians and friends - access the energetic
potential of this new phase of your life. Whether you are
facing menopause, feeling it, or floundering through its
after-effects, you can access your body's own wisdom to
find balance.
Purple Moon Dance Project's Artistic Director Jill Togawa,
an experienced dancer/choreographer and certified teacher
of the Alexander Technique, combines gentle sensitive and
culturally-diverse perspective.
Session Two will encourage exploration of feelings and
experiences of loss during this transition, and the potential
for liberation that is also present. Other sessions in the
ongoing series will explore such qualities of the menopausal
transition as change and flexibility, strength and vulnerability,
opportunity and potential.
Class meets most Tuesdays, 5:30-7:00 pm. Optional tea
conversation and resource sharing from 7:00-7:30. $25 covers

The Summer of Her Baldness: A Cancer Improvisation by
Catherine Lord
Catherine Lord will read from her new book, The Summer
of Her Baldness: A Cancer Improvisation. In this irreverent,
irascible, polemical memoir, Lord offers an unconventional
look at life with breast cancer and the societal space occupied
by the seriously ill. Using email, photographs, and her
own journals, Lord talks back to the society that stigmatizes
bald women, not to mention middle-aged lesbians with a life-threatening
disease. Books will be available for sale and signing.

Healing Adventures Kayaking
Join Healing Adventures for a gentle outdoor adventure
or earth celebration. Our programs are geared for people
challenging illnesses and families with school-age children.
We take special care to accommodate any pace and most medical
and physical needs.
Most people who participate in our programs are new to
these activities or returning to physical activity while
in recovery. Our experienced leaders are dedicated to creating
an atmosphere of both physical and emotional safety for
all. And we have a lot of fun! Family members, caregivers
and friends are encouraged to participate. Scholarships
are available.
Our sea kayaks are very stable and easy to paddle. No previous
experience is necessary. To meet the needs of the group
we provide a combination of single, double and triple kayaks.
Even if you cannot paddle a boat, we can match you with
a kayak guide as a partner to do the work.
Elkhorn Slough Paddle, Saturday, October 30th

Back by popular demand: The Second Annual Lesbian Health
Salon Series Announced by LHRC - 1st Salon October 21, 2004
The Salon Series continues to bring Lesbian Health Information
into the Community -
Following on from last years’ success the Lesbian
Health Salon Series organized by the Lesbian Health Research
Center (LHRC) and co-sponsored by Bay Area Community of
Women (BACW) will be held on Thursday, October 21st, 7:00
PM - 8:30 PM. (Series schedule below). Each Salon in the
series will include a meet and mingle hour followed by an
informal, interactive discussion on a selected topic led
by LHRC medical and research leaders. There is no charge
to attend.
The Salon Series was initiated last year by LHRC Community
Leadership Circle co-chair, Jan Corlett, PhD. At each event
the question of how lesbian health differs from women's
health in general will be briefly addressed. Timeframe for
each Salon is 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM.

Participating in the Salons will be interested community
members, health care personnel and others who wish to explore
topics related to lesbian health and the services and functions
of LHRC. Medical practitioners, researchers and others in
the field will serve as featured speakers.
