Calling all Volunteers and Swimmers!
Yes, it is that time of year again: the 10th annual
Swim a Mile for Women with Cancer will be Saturday, October
1 and Sunday, October 2. We need your help to get the word
out to the Swim community.
Please join us for a Swim a Mile mailing party at the Womens
Cancer Resource Center.
WHEN: Saturday, June 18, 11-2
WHERE: WCRC 5741 Telegraph Ave Oakland
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING: stamping, labeling, stuffing and
sealing!
FOOD: pizza, salad and drinks will be provided
We need to get the word out to past swimmers, swim teams,
pools and other cancer/women-focused organizations and need
your help to do it! These mailing/work parties are excellent
opportunities to get to know the Swim a Mile volunteers,
swimmers and community members better, so we would love
for you to join us!
If you are available to help, please contact Ali Vogt,
Swim a Mile Coordinator, at ali@wcrc.org
WCRC Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering with WCRC is a really fun thing to do!
You have the opportunity to be a part of a community, health
or volunteer fair, find out about the great work being done
at other organizations and also there is often good music,
beautiful art and delicious food. Please contact me if you
would like to sign up for one of these events. The shifts
will probably be for about 2 or 3 hours each and we try
to have 2 people per shift. One person stops by the center
to pick up the materials prior to the event and another
person returns the materials sometime the following week.

Volunteer Training
Before volunteering in most of our programs, we require
that new volunteers attend a Volunteer Training.
The Training includes, but is not limited to...
- a presentation on the Biology of Cancer by an RN from
UCSF
- a panel of women who share their own personal experience
with cancer
- a social worker who works in the oncology unit of a
local hospital presents a segment on the challenges faced
by many low-income women who receive a cancer diagnosis
- Active Listening skill building
The Volunteer Training provides new volunteers with the
opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of cancer,
to meet new volunteers and to create a sense of connection
with the WCRC community.
