Out and About in Rockridge
As many of you know, the WCRC is participating in the College Avenue Street fair – Out and About – on Sunday, September 25. The merchants association has invited us to have a table in a prominent location at which we will share information about our services and sell raffle tickets. Thanks to donations by College Avenue merchants we will be able to offer raffle winners a variety of different gifts.

The real success of this raffle is contingent on the number of tickets we can sell before the event – by YOU to your circle of friends, family and fans. We would like to invite you to purchase however many tickets you think you can sell. Tickets come in booklets of thirty and cost $50/booklet. We recommend selling them at $5 for 3 tickets, but you can also sell them $2/ticket. Unfortunately, board members and staff are not eligible to win, but you can make this event wildly successful by encouraging your loved ones to purchase tickets.

Would you let us know how many tickets you would like to purchase and sell? We understand that you need to consider upcoming asks for swim pledges or other asks you have or will make. Here’s how it works:

  1. Set a realistic number
  2. Give Sarah a check in exchange for booklets
  3. Sell, sell, sell up until September 25th

Thanks for helping to make this fundraising event a success!

She will provide free pedicures (gratuities for the pedicurists not included). This is a $315 value package.

In addition, the owner of FIT, a women's clothing store, is donating a $250 gift certificate.

New Program Helps Cancer Patients in Novel Way
Acclaimed authors and patients gather for mutual gain

Oakland — A study published in the Journal of Oncology showed that early stage breast cancer patients who wrote about their feelings under the guidance of a psychologist experienced one-third fewer cancer-related physical problems. Yet many people do not feel comfortable writing on their own. A new program, "Cancer in So Many Words," will kick off September 22, with an event featuring acclaimed authors from across the nation who will empower cancer survivors to use the written word to express their thoughts and feelings.

Sponsored by the Women’s Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) of Oakland, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center's Markstein Cancer Education and Prevention Center, and the Carol Ann Read Breast Center, Cancer in So Many Words will feature authors including: journalist, filmmaker, and cancer survivor Lori Hope, author of the new book, Help Me Live: 20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know; former 20/20 producer and breast cancer survivor, Geralyn Lucas, author of Why I wore Lipstick to my Mastectomy; U.S. News & World Reports editor Marc Silver, breast cancer husband, and author of Breast Cancer Husband: How to Help Your Wife (and Yourself) during Diagnosis, Treatment and Beyond; Jeff Kane, MD, veteran cancer support group leader and author of How to Heal: A Guide for Caregivers; and Marsha Tomassi, co-author of One Bite at a Time, a cookbook of dishes that appeal to people undergoing cancer treatment.

The kick off event for Cancer in So Many Words will be held from 6-8:30pm on September 22nd in the Fontaine Auditorium at Summit's Health Education Center, 400 Hawthorne Avenue, Oakland, 94609.

The authors, all of whom have been impacted by cancer, will talk about how and why they started writing, as well as read from their books. Questions from the audience and a discussion will follow.

A donation of $10.00 is requested at the door. No one will be refused admittance. Proceeds will be used to fund writing programs for cancer survivors. Raffle tickets will be available at the door, with prizes featuring packs of the authors’ books and other items, including gift certificates for spas.
