Women's Cancer Resource Center News

March 2007

I was taught early in my non-profit career that "gratitude is the heart of philanthropy." Many, many people dedicate their hearts and souls to assure that the Women's Cancer Resource Center continues to provide culturally sensitive services to all women with any cancer. Please join me in thanking just a few of the wonderful people and organizations that have stepped forward this year:

  • Sheila Head is holding a benefit for us at her Head Designs salon on March 17.
  • Led By Alex Gilmete and Jane Mele, the International Facility Managers Association of the East Bay is hosting a June 4 Golf Tournament at the Round Hill Country Club in Alamo on our behalf.
  • The Imperial Star Empire, Inc. and the Royal Grand Ducal Council of Alameda County is holding a dinner and Cabaret to benefit WCRC on April 14.
  • The Y&H Soda Foundation awarded us a grant to pilot the Community Health Advocate Program and The San Francisco Foundation has requested a site visit to discuss the program. The Soroptimists of Oakland also awarded a grant to support the Community Health Advocate program.
  • Elisabeth Cornu recently led a private tour of the exquisite Masterpieces of French Jewelry exhibit at the Legion of Honor for our donors.
  • We are a beneficiary of the 2007 Support Strokes for Breast Cancer sponsored by California Canoe and Kayak on May 19.
  • The Breast Cancer Fund made us a beneficiary of their 2007 Bike Against the Odds.
  • Responding to votes cast by the clients and employees of Give Something Back, this innovative company made a generous donation.
  • Nancy Castille facilitated a gift from Wells Fargo.
  • Alice Radio is making us the beneficiary of its 11th Annual CD coming out in the fall and will be a Swim a Mile sponsor.

Thank you!

 For Bart Ticket Holders

BART tickets with tiny bits of value on them that you find in your wallet, pockets and drawers have just become far more valuable to the Bay Area's community organizations. As part of the Tiny Tickets Program, BART ticket holders may donate these tickets to the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Connecting local resources and community needs is what the Tiny Tickets Program is all about. Please send your "tiny tickets" directly to WCRC at 5741 Telegraph Avenue Oakland, CA 94609. If you're in the area you may also drop them off Monday - Friday 9 AM - 5 PM

 Clutter-Clearing

Is one of your New Year's resolutions to get rid of all that stuff that is taking up space in your garage and closets? If so, those items can be donated to the Community Thrift Store and in turn they will make a donation to WCRC. Donate your items to Community Thrift Store and designate the Women's Cancer Resource Center as your beneficiary. Visit the Community Thrift Store at 625 Valencia Street, San Francisco or call them at 415.861.4910 for more information.

 Monthly Donations

Merle Weiner, the Board President of the Women's Cancer Resource Center since 2003, has contributed to the success of the Center in countless ways. She leads, guides and inspires all of us to take on new challenges on behalf of the women we serve.

Merle has set a personal fundraising goal for herself in 2007- to convince 60 individuals to become monthly online donors to the Women's Cancer Resource Center. She issued this challenge to our Board:

Our board has been a 100% giving board for a couple of years now. I ask you to join with me in being a 100% monthly giving board by signing up to make a regular monthly donation. Giving in this way is painless. Add $10, $25, $50 a month to your credit card and you probably won't even notice the difference. But to the Center, that difference will mean $120, $300, $600 a year that goes to general support.

Using the website to sign up for monthly credit card donations is very easy. But, for anyone who doesn't want to use a credit card, monthly checks are fine.

And please think about anyone you know who might be willing to sign up for a small donation every month. I'm now officially obsessed with growing this important source of funds for the Center.

Within hours nearly every Board member responded and agreed to join our monthly donors program.

Please help the Women's Cancer Resource Center (and help Merle meet her goal) by accepting the challenge and joining our monthly donors program. For more information see the make a donation page.
