Women's Cancer Resource Center News
April 2007
Dear Friends,
I couldn't sleep last night after learning about the terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech and so at about 3:00 in the morning I pulled out a book called The Vision of Peace: Faith and Hope in Northern Ireland. It's a collection of essays edited by Irish Nobel prize winner Mary Corrigan Maguire (no relation) who, out of the painful depths of violence among her own people, has developed a profound vision for peace and social change. There is one essay in particular that comforts me.
It is written by Thomas Merton, who cautioned peacemakers in Northern Ireland and social activists around the world to avoid the mistake of becoming "success oriented" and failing to recognize that the diseases and injustices we struggle against are very complex and advanced.
"Do not depend on the hope of results," Merton wrote. "When you are doing the sort of work you have taken on, especially an apostolic work, you have to face the fact that the work will apparently be worthless and achieve no result at all, if not perhaps results opposite to what you expect.
"As you get used to this idea, you start more and more to concentrate not on the results, but the value, the rightness, the truth of the work itself. And there too a great deal has to be gone through, as gradually you struggle less and less for an idea and more and more for specific people. The range tends to narrow down, but it gets much more real. In the end, it is the power of personal relationships that saves everything. The big results are not in your hands or mine, but they suddenly happen, and we can share in them, but there is no point in building our lives on this personal satisfaction, which may be denied us and which after all is not that important."
I take real inspiration from Merton's insight that "in the end, it is the reality of personal relationships that saves everything."
For the staff and volunteers of the Women's Cancer Resource Center, it is a huge challenge to stay focused on what we want to be true for the women we serve. But we do. Every day. One woman at a time.

For Bart Ticket Holders
BART tickets with tiny bits of value on them that you find in your wallet, pockets and drawers have just become far more valuable to the Bay Area's community organizations. Connecting local resources and community needs is what the Tiny Tickets Program is all about. Please send your "tiny tickets" directly to WCRC at 5741 Telegraph Avenue Oakland, CA 94609. If you're in the area you may also drop them off Monday - Friday 9 AM - 5 PM

Spring is a great time to get rid of all that stuff that is taking up space in your garage and closets. Most of that "stuff" can be donated to the Community Thrift Store and in turn they will make a donation to WCRC. Studies Recruiting Participants
Coping, Meaning and Adjustment Among Female Cancer Survivors
The title of my research is called "Coping, Meaning and Adjustment Among Female Cancer Survivors." I'm hoping to interview women that are between six months and ten years in remission. I'll be conducting telephone interviews between 45 and 60 minutes. Participants will receive $15 dollar gift cards (to the store of their choice) or I will make a donation to a charity on their behalf.
The interviews will be looking at how women coped with having cancer physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually, as well as how they adjusted to being a survivor and how they made meaning out of their experience.
If interested, please contact Emily Gilbert, social work student at San Francisco State University: egilbert@sfsu.edu and 415.368.5232.
