Women's Cancer Resource Center News
July 2007
Dear Friends,
For more than 20 years, WCRC has provided free information, services, emotional support, financial assistance, and advocacy for more than 60,000 women with cancer and their families and friends in the Bay Area.
- WCRC focuses on serving those who have traditionally faced significant barriers to access health care, including Latina and African-American/Black women, women from low-income communities, as well as lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
- Research has shown that African American women have higher death rates than white women for most cancers, because they are often diagnosed at an advanced stage when cancer is harder to treat and cure.
- Research has found the Community Health Advocate model to be effective in increasing screening for early detection of breast and cervical cancer. Community Health Advocates are more effective in getting women to utilize screening because they understand the attitudes and beliefs of women in their communities and use shared cultural knowledge and social networks. Community Health Advocates can also serve as navigators and advocates for women to ensure timely access to care and equitable treatment.
The Women's Cancer Resource Center has launched a pilot project to recruit, train and engage eight to twelve African American/Black women in serving as community health advocates. These women are participating in 11.5 hours of training to prepare them to reach out to other women in the communities where they live, work, worship, raise their children to educate them about the importance of early screening and detection for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer and to serve as navigators and advocates for women to ensure timely access to care and equitable treatment.
Under the leadership of Dolores Moorehead, WCRC's Client Services Manager and Katherine Brown, program volunteer, the program aims to reach 60-80 women during this one-year pilot. "We want to see women who look like us and understand our culture," says Moorehead, a 20-year veteran of cancer services.
The training of the Community Health Advocates is conducted by colleagues from the American Cancer Society, Highland Hospital Patient Navigator Program, Northern California Cancer Center , and UCSF Medical Center and includes topics such as communication, setting and maintaining boundaries, confidentiality, accessing community resources and cultural awareness.
Funding for this project has been awarded by the Y&H Soda, The San Francisco, Soroptimists and the Avon Foundations.
