Chicano Art and Visions of David Tafolla
The artist's reception will be on Saturday, March 10 from
1 to 3PM.
The WCRC Gallery is pleased to feature the creative works
of David Manzanares Tafolla. Tafolla paints acrylic and oil
canvases vivid with color and Latino imagery. Some paintings
feature Frida Kahlo or the Virgin while other showcase gorgeous
brown women with calla lilies. Then there are his resplendent
works featuring luscious watermelon and other fruit. Tafolla
began painting in his twenties after studying painting at
the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He feels that
his art is about the intersection of raw energy, power, beauty
and culture. Tafolla utilizes the lineage of both his pre-Columbian
and Iberian ancestors in his creations. He has recently begun
using amate - the pre-Columbian paper the Aztecs used that
is derived from the ficus tree.
Tafolla attended the Academy of Art College in San Francisco
and has exhibited internationally. His venues include: Oakland
Museum, Pro Arts Gallery, Mission Cultural Center, Somar Gallery,
and the Unity Council.
The show runs March 5 through April 12, 2001. The opening
reception with the artist will be held Saturday, March 10,
1 - 3 PM.
