The Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer is an annual benefit for the Women's Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) in Oakland, California. This is our 18th Swim.
WCRC creates opportunities for women with cancer to improve their quality of life through education, supportive services and practical assistance. Volunteers are at the heart of our work and we depend on the community to support our local efforts. We serve more than 5,000 women a year and their families. WCRC currently has a staff of ten, and a core of 90 dedicated volunteers are at the heart of the Center.

WCRC has a breadth and depth of personalized services, resources and information that support the local community, including information on comprehensive complementary and alternative treatments for cancer. WCRC supports a women’s right to make her own informed decisions. The Center provides information, resources, support services, and advocacy for all women with cancer, focusing on women of color, as well as women from low-income communities and/or those who lack access to quality health care. All programs and services at WCRC are free and culturally appropriate.
$25 buys art supplies for the Cultural & Healing Arts program
$50 buys organic ingredients for our cooking club
$100 funds a Community Health Advocate to accompany a client to doctor visits during treatment
$250 pays for a comprehensive training for our In-Home Support volunteers
$500 provides emergency financial assistance for a woman with breast cancer – rent, utilities and groceries
$1,000 funds our support group for women with metastatic cancer
