Wellness Workshops


We offer a variety of classes and workshops to promote healthy living, cancer prevention, and quality of life through creativity, movement, education, and activism. Many workshops are reserved for women with cancer, while others are open to everyone.

During the Summer months we will focus on different themes.

July- Want to incorporate letters, words and writing into your drawing? We will look at different fonts and different ways to do this. bring ideas and/or a favorite quote or short poem.
August – Creating a thematic sketchbook or series of drawings. Whether location or topic, make a unified series or art about the city where you live, someplace you visit, your pet, self-portraits or another subject of your choosing. 
September – Explore more watercolor techniques and tips for using this medium in your sketchbook.

You are always welcome to work independently on your own project.

Basic supplies provided or bring your own sketchbook or favorite supplies.

Melbra Watts is an energy medicine health coach who provides coaching and training in wellness and holistic development to individuals and groups to reduce stress, improve performance and lower healthcare costs. Everyone welcome. Registration is required for each individual class.

(LIB) Bodyscapes Healing Art Workshop: Making Art Out of Illness

When:
July 29, 2017 @ 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Through a guided use of the dictionary and thesaurus, we will uncover, as the poet does, new words and phrases to more aptly describe how we feel to live in a body with illness. We will create a drawing of the part of our body which is ill, showing our pain, frustration, and healing in vibrant colors. These powerful drawings will tell our stories from illness to wellness. Easy to follow along and there is no art experience required.

If you would like to show your drawing and poem in the Bodyscapes art show in the JanRae Community Art Gallery on Friday September 15, 2017,  you will need to attend this workshop.

Diane Sciarretta has a background  teaching art in the public schools which has given her the skills to quickly teach anyone to create accurate and beautiful drawings. She created the Bodyscapes Technique during her own healing journey illness.

Melbra Watts is an energy medicine health coach who provides coaching and training in wellness and holistic development to individuals and groups to reduce stress, improve performance and lower healthcare costs. Everyone welcome. Registration is required for each individual class.

While gut health has become the new trendy topic in the health world, most people do not understand the repercussions of an imbalanced gut. As a result, the majority of people in the US suffer from conditions directly related to and treatable by improving gut health.

We will discuss the function of the digestive system as well as how the health of our gut affects our brain, disease progression, and immune system. You will learn techniques to identify health imbalances and leave educated and empowered with tools to immediately improve your health. Handouts, recipes, and tools to identify both your current health as well as how to improve it will  be provided.

Join artist Ruth Block, author of,  A Year of Sunday’s: The Mandala as An Artist’s Portal.

These 3 Summer workshops will involve demonstrations of specific techniques, guided imagery to discover your own personal symbols, and time to ‘co-create’ a healing mandala from your ‘higher self’/’deeper purpose’ for self-healing, for a loved one, or for the planet or planetary consciousness. Please come on time if possible so as not to interrupt the visualization/meditation experience and demos. 

 Creating a Healing Mandala Part I, II, III: There will be a demonstration on how to create luminosity using white pencil on a black background,using luscious watercolor techniques and colored pencils/or watercolor pencils. Participants will go deeper into their inner wisdom and vision, and then emerge to create these simple, yet profoundly powerful healing mandalas.Please come on time if possible so as not to interrupt the visualization/meditation experience and demos. An introductory class on how to turn plastic bags into yarn for a myriad of practical and fun applications. Class will be taught in both Spanish and English.

We will make a circular loom and learn to create whimsical daisy flowers to decorate and enjoy.

Laura Echegaray has been experimenting with discarded materials since her early childhood.  She later earned a Master’s degree in Architecture, a passion she combines with paper folding, sculpting, poetry and the healing arts. Laura teaches visual art at local museums and  community organization throughout the Bay Area  since 2006. Everyone welcome. Registration required.

Una clase introductoria sobre cómo usar bolsas de plástico como hilo para una miríada de usos prácticos y aplicaciones divertidas. Esta clase se llevara a cabo en inglés y español.
Vamos a hacer un telar circular y aprenderemos a crear unas margaritas juguetonas y fantásticas para decorar y disfrutar. 
Laura Echegaray ha estado experimentando con materiales desechados desde su niñez temprana; después ella obtuvo su maestría en arquitectura, una pasión que combina con el doblado de papel, escultura, poesía, y las artes curativas. Laura da clases de arte visual en museos locales y organizaciones comunitarias por toda la bahía desde el 2006. Todos están bienvenidos. (Registración requerida.)

Melbra Watts is an energy medicine health coach who provides coaching and training in wellness and holistic development to individuals and groups to reduce stress, improve performance and lower healthcare costs. Everyone welcome. Registration is required for each individual class.

During the Summer months we will focus on different themes.

July- Want to incorporate letters, words and writing into your drawing? We will look at different fonts and different ways to do this. bring ideas and/or a favorite quote or short poem.
August – Creating a thematic sketchbook or series of drawings. Whether location or topic, make a unified series or art about the city where you live, someplace you visit, your pet, self-portraits or another subject of your choosing. 
September – Explore more watercolor techniques and tips for using this medium in your sketchbook.

You are always welcome to work independently on your own project.

Basic supplies provided or bring your own sketchbook or favorite supplies.

The Bay Area is a vibrant community comprised of diverse cultural populations. Unfortunately, illnesses like cancer take their greatest toll among historically marginalized and under-served communities.  Join us for a conversation on cancer clinical trials led by Dr. Rena Pasick from the University of California, San Francisco. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Pasick has worked to level the playing field in the fight against cancer.  She does this through her own research in low-income communities and clinics, by advancing the careers of young people of color, and through community action and education.

Are you trying to reduce your stress? Consider tapping it out! Participants will learn an easy tapping sequence of acupressure points and be guided in tapping through layers of stress and into greater health and wellbeing. For women who have/had cancer and cancer care supporters!

Melbra Watts is an energy medicine health coach who provides coaching and training in wellness and holistic development to individuals and groups to reduce stress, improve performance and lower healthcare costs. Everyone welcome. Registration is required for each individual class.
