Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an active 10-week course that
blends guided meditation, body awareness, gentle yoga, and group discussion to
reduce physical and psychological distress, while building resilience, balance,
and peace of mind. These techniques cultivate an awareness of thoughts,
actions, and motivations to improve one’s ability to effectively manage stress,
pain, and illness.
MBSR was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Since its inception in 1979, MBSR has evolved into a common form of complementary medicine addressing a variety of health problems. Research indicates that the MBSR program significantly improved participants’ quality of life and reduced perceived stress, depression, and anxiety. Daily practice of assigned mindfulness techniques will greatly increase positive results of attending this course.
