The JanRae Community Art Gallery

Since 1998, the JanRae Community Art Gallery has showcased the work of hundreds of local artists. Rotating art shows provide a warm and inviting atmosphere for clients who visit WCRC. A few of the most notable shows include Repositories of Feeling: The Art of Carol Doyle, ¡Salud! Latino Art & Health Fairs, the Cancer and the Environment International Mail Art Show, more than ten years of satellite shows with The Art of the African Diaspora, and several shows that included work by WCRC clients. Additionally, opening receptions offer WCRC clients and community a chance to get out, see great art, meet new people, enjoy snacks and live music.

An Oral History:
The very first show that I curated at the center was of Jan Hart-Schuyers’ work. It was very soon after she passed away, and I asked her husband, Henri, if she could be the first show there. So I went to their house and he had it all packed up. There were these huge masks that she had made on aluminum-baking pans. Then she had paintings and she had other papier mâche sculptures, and wonderful stained glass, and I think there were even some wax sculptures that she made. So all this stuff, I loaded into my truck and I bring it to the center. And I just looked at it. What am I supposed to do with all this?
Then the next thing I knew, I was getting it up and I was just putting it places, and thought, Jan must be helping me, because I don’t know what I’m doing. But I got it all up on the walls. I made chicken wings and I made peach cobbler and I don’t remember what else. I invited people and Henri invited people and we probably had 40 people. It was great. And this beautiful art everywhere. So that was our first show.”

Gallery Rotation:
Hundreds of established and emerging artists have shown their work in the gallery, which winds throughout the WCRC building.
There are usually four art shows each year. Each show has an artist reception with refreshments and live music. Art shows are announced on this webpage, in our quarterly printed calendar, in our monthly e-newsletter, and on our Facebook page.
