Clean or Concerning? with BCPP (V)
November 12 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join the Women’s Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) and Charlotte Maxwell Clinic for Clean or Concerning? an engaging virtual workshop presented by Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (BCPP). This interactive session will take a closer look at the personal care, beauty, household cleaning, and medical products we encounter every day and help participants better understand what may be hiding behind ingredient lists and marketing claims.
For more than 30 years, BCPP has worked at the intersection of science, public health, environmental health, and policy to prevent breast cancer by reducing exposure to toxic chemicals and creating healthier environments. BCPP translates scientific research into practical education and advocates for policies and corporate practices that make safer products more accessible to everyone. Their work recognizes that preventing harmful exposures isn’t simply an individual responsibility—it also requires changes to the systems, products, and policies that shape our everyday lives.
The workshop will be led by Pujeeta Chowdhary, MPH, Senior Science and Education Manager; Laura Gillan, MPH, Senior Program and Policy Manager; and Astrid Williams, DrPH, Manager of BCPP’s Non-Toxic Black Beauty Project. Together, they bring expertise in environmental health science, toxicology, public health, policy, and environmental justice. Their work includes translating complex research about chemical exposures into accessible information, advancing policies that reduce exposure to toxic chemicals, and addressing the disproportionate impacts of beauty and personal-care product exposures on Black women and girls.
Participants will learn practical ways to decode product labels, identify chemicals of concern, look beyond terms such as “clean” and “natural,” and better understand the science behind safer choices. The workshop will also explore medical devices such as IV bags and tubing, household cleaners, and personal-care products, giving participants a broader understanding of how everyday exposures can intersect with breast cancer prevention and environmental health.
Our classes and workshops are available to women and non-binary individuals, who are Alameda or Contra Costa County residents, and who either have/had cancer, or who are/have been a support person for someone with cancer.
